If you are looking to purchase a Friesian you should take a few things into consideration.
Cross-breeding throughout the years has led to many variations of this graceful beauty but if you are looking for a pure-bred then you should keep a few things in mind.
If you reside in the US then you are going to want to belong to the Friesian Horse Association of North America (FHANA), and then straight to the Netherlands to register with the KFPS. All registered horses will either have a tongue tattoo (before the 1999 year period), and more recently the horses were given a microchip. Some older horses may have to be checked for both. The tattoo, or the chip must be matched to their passport, and unless you have all of the proper paperwork – the deal should be off right there.
Determining whether a Friesian is a ‘good’ investment or not is going to take so work. Horses that come from a first, second or even a third premie studbook will be of a better standard. There are also “training day inspections” that you can attend (and should) which will offer you a lot more information. Additionally, if the horse was a ‘premie’ grade, you’ll need to know if this was recent, when it was a foal, or as an adult
As with any purchase (that lives and breathes) you’ll want to make absolutely positive that your new Friesian is in good health. Friesian’s are not the same cost as taking your puppy to the vet – it’s very, VERY expensive.
In order to ensure you are getting the best breed possible you should have the horse checked for worms, aortal ruptures as well as male castration. Make sure the Friesian has had its shots; mud fever, heel mites and checked for skin conditions.
Remember when you’re buying a Friesian (under the age of 3) they are much different from other breeds, so when someone tells you that their Friesian is ‘saddle’ trained, a red flag should go off. A Friesian may have ‘limited’ experience with a saddle, since at that age a Friesian is still considered to be a baby. It should (will) take you a fair amount of time and effort in order to get your new ‘baby’ where you want them to be regarding saddle riding.
When purchasing a Friesian you are going to want to make sure that all of your facts are correct and that you have correctly verified all of your research. A second opinion is never a bad option, and cross referencing with the KFPS is always a good idea. Please see; Friesian Sale
While the price will vary significantly depending on the age and other factors you can expect to spend about $6,500 as an average price. Keep in mind that some of these horses can be $125,000, and even upward of $1,000,000! Friesian horses are a great beauty to behold but when purchasing a horse make sure you do your homework, get familiar with the vender and make sure to ask all the necessary questions prior to the Friesian sale.

Cherry Hill always has great books that are both interesting and informational. I have several in my home library and this may be the most useful one that I own. The horse is so much more complicated than people realize and if you are able to understand what your horse is thinking then you will be able to be more successful in anything and everything you do with your horses. The book has been an excellent source of information for training my own colts and understanding what they are thinking when you are trying to get them to respond to what you are asking them to do.
Cherry Hill is a great trainer and writer. She has a great way of explaining training procedures and offers excellent information on how to make training easier on both the trainer and the horse. Your horse will thank you for reading this book!
